  Assumptions of Appreciative Inquiry

Dr. David E. Nelson

Appreciative Inquiry is an alternative way of looking at organizations and employee performance.  It recongizes there is a powerful energy in paying attention to what works.  It is being used in many companies these days to build on past strengths to insure future success.  The eight assumptions of Appreciative Inquiry provide a clear set of glasses to wear as you partner with other people.

 1.  In every person and organization something works.

 2.  What we focus on becomes our reality.

 3.  Reality is created in the moment, and there are multiple realties.

 4.  Being present to another person influences the person in some way.

 5.  People have more confidence and comfort to journey to the future (the unknown) when they carry forward part of the past (the known).

 6.  If we carry parts of the past forward, they should be what are best about the past.

 7. It is important to value and celebrate differences.

 8. The language we use creates our reality.
